Making the most of the lovely Autumn sunshine.
Today the children from Room 20's reading class enjoyed being outside and having the opportunity to relax and just enjoy reading their book. Long may this weather last!

Extra Snapshots Of Our Big Day Out in Term One
Thank you to Charlie's mum for the photos.
Thank you Kylie for the delicious cupcakes to celebrate Anaru's birthday. We all loved them :)
April Fools!
Room 25 got a big surprise on Friday morning when their classroom was shifted to the field. Mrs Dykstra's birthday is on April fools day and so some of the teachers thought they would give her a birthday surprise. The children spent until morning tea time learning in their new environment.
Wizard Of Oz
The children in Room 19 had great fun writing in pairs to revise the story of the Wizard of Oz. The children were given a specific card that they had to write about. With card 2, we had to decide who the main characters were - Dorothy, Tin Woodman, Scarecrow, Lion, Glenda the Good Witch of the North, Wicked Witch of The West and Oz. Afterwards, the children drafted, published their writing and sketched their picture. Come to Room 19 for a read.
The Shirt Of Happiness
As part of Philosophy in Room 19, we read and discussed a short story called ‘The Shirt Of Happiness’.
The children are learning to use the Philosophy cards as part of a class discussion and learn that they are in control of the discussion and not the teacher. The 'Look' and 'Listen' are procedural cards and the 'Because' and 'Piggyback' cards will extend children's thinking, as they relate ideas together.
Afterwards, we came up with statements about what 'Happinesses' means to us, using the word because.
Happiness is biking with my friends because we can do tricks on our bikes. Cameron
Happiness is when it is snowing because I can either watch it snow or play in the snow too. Millie Happiness is when you have a smile on your face and you are having fun. Mila Happiness is when someone makes you laugh because they say something funny. Lily I feel happy when I eat fruit because it is delicious. Henry Happiness is when you enjoy being you. Amy Happiness is a type of laughter. Matilda Happiness is when you play sport because it makes you fit. Charlie Happiness is spending time with family and friends because you can do things together. Harvey Happiness is when my friends tell me jokes because they make me laugh. Finn Happiness is when I am at school because I have the best teacher. Millie |
We all enjoyed designing our own ‘Shirt of Happiness’. What colours, shapes and words have we used?
Maths magic in Room 20
Today in Room 20 we have been using dice to consolidate place value knowledge. We made the biggest number from a roll of three dice and then had to order all our numbers from largest to smallest.
Superstars on the weekend.
This weekend Charlotte, Mila and Lucy completed the XRACE with a parent supporting them. Their favourite activities were blindfolding their parent, tying a tie following some instructions and remembering 9 items and the parent having to work out the crossword. What a fabulous race to compete in. This is held every year and hopefully some children might be inspired to compete in it next year. Top effort girls!
Ciara has had a super season playing cricket for Old Boys Collegian. She was very proud of her "Best Allrounder" achievement for the year. Well done Ciara!

This week in Room 20 we have been reading the Wizard of Oz and watching parts of the movie. We have been writing a character description of Dorothy. Check out some of the fantastic writing from children in Room 20. Some of the children still have more to write - Wow how clever are we!!!
Dorothy has brown, thick long hair done in beautiful long plaits. Dorothy has pale skin just like turtle doves. She has red bows as red as strawberries that are ripe. Her eyes are as brown as chocolate that has just come out of the fridge. Her lips are as ripe as berries just been picked.
Dorothy follows the very bright yellow brick road to get to the shiny Emerald City, on the way she finds a Scarecrow on a very long pole in the middle of a field, she helps him off and the Scarecrow falls. Very pleased he said to Dorothy "these crows have been on my shoulder for a very long time." Dorothy said to the Scarecrow "could you get them off?" and "no" replied the Scarecrow "I have no brain"
"Oh" said Dorothy "would you like to come to see the Wizard of Oz with me?"...................
Emily
Dorothy's hair is brown like chocolate, she has lovely strawberry lips and Beautiful white skin, She wears a lovely gingham dress and has lovely brown eyes. She wears ruby red shoes with blue bows on them from the Witch of the East. She has really puffy bubbles on top of her shoulders. As she was singing along the road she meets the Tin Man and oils his body...........
Dorothy gets sucked up by a ginormous tornado and ends up in an amazing land full of cute Munchkins. Suddenly a strange bubble comes towards her and POPS it is the Fairy Queen. She said "follow the yellow Brick Road". Suddenly she sees a strange person hanging from a pole and its the Scarecrow so she helps him down.........
Maya
Dorothy has red ruby shoes, white socks as white as cream and she has a blue gingham dress. She has hair as brown as chocolate and pig tails, she is holding ToTo in her arms and a basket.
Dorothy goes to the Emerald City with the permission of the Witch of the North. She follows the yellow brick road.........
Charles
Dorothy has hazel eyes and lips that are red as blood. She has thick brown hair and is very tall and wears sparkly shoes. Her dress is as blue as the sea and she holds a basket.
Dorothy follows the yellow brick road to get to Emerald City, she meets Scarecrow and lifts off the pole and he falls on his bottom. As she is singing along the road she meets the Tin Man and oils his body...............
Jayden
Dorothy has thick long brown hair and she has a lovely blue and white checkered dress and ruby slippers. She has chocolate brown eyes and pale white skin and lips that are red as strawberries.
Dorothy sets off to the shiny Emerald City and follows the yellow brick road. Dorothy is helpful enough to get the Scarecrow off the pole and they both set off and see big red ripe apples stuck on trees. She picks some off and then the trees wake up and get Dorothy. One apple lands in a bush and then she sees a tin foot. Dorothy bangs the tin body, and then she hears a noise..........

Happy Birthday Charlie!
Room 19 children all enjoyed tasting a fudge ball for Charlie's birthday.
This is a family tradition that happens each year.

Last week all the Year 3/4 classes joined together in Rooms 17 and 18 to discuss our hubs names. These relate to the trees found in the indigenous podocarp forests of Aotearoa New Zealand. We talked about how trees reach for the light and grow tall which links with our school value of excellence. There is also a connection with our values of manaakitanga and community in how the trees in a forest protect and sustain the smaller plants, birds and insects which we believe links to our expectations for the tamariki in our hubs looking out for the younger children at St Albans.
The names we decided on are;
Rooms 15 & 16 : Rimu
Rooms 17 & 18 :Tōtara
Rooms 19, 20 & 21 : Kahikatea
Don't forget to click on the contact information link on the top of this page and enter your contact details (these are private to only the classroom teacher). We will gather all contacts and send home a playdate list to the people who have entered at the end of Week 5.
